A few years back I ran across the Great Beer Guide: 500 Classic Brews by Michael Jackson (the beer hunter).  It's a little dated, but has provided a nice starting point for seeking out different beers.  Probably the biggest drawback is that it appears to have been written before the emergence of many of the best American breweries.  Therefore the list is pretty heavy on European beers, some of which are impossible to get in the States.  I believe there may be an updated version, but mine was originally printed in 2000.  Below are the beers I have sampled from the list.
